Raiders facing tough battle to retain Hudson Young

Canberra Raiders face an intensified three-month race to secure second-rower Hudson Young's signature, with the Papua New Guinea Chiefs reportedly positioning themselves to make a substantial offer if Young reaches the open market on November 1. This development significantly complicates negotiations for Canberra, who had appeared close to extending Young’s contract.

Young has established himself as one of the National Rugby League's premier second-rowers, a status underlined by his repeated selection for the State of Origin series. His absence from the Rugby League World Cup was solely due to a season-ending Achilles injury, not a lack of form or selection status.

Chiefs' Strategic Recruitment Drive

The Chiefs' financial incentives, including tax-free arrangements, could enable them to outbid the Raiders' reported offer of close to $1 million per year for a three-year extension. Club officials, led by Michael Chammas, are reportedly prioritizing forward recruitment from November 1, with Young understood to be high on their list Zero Tackle's reporting.

Beyond Young, the Chiefs are expected to pursue several middle-third forwards. Potential targets mentioned include Cooper Bai, whose contract with the Titans runs through 2027 with a 2028 option, as well as players uncontracted beyond 2027 such as Victor Radley, Isaah Yeo, J'maine Hopgood, Moses Leota, and Xavier Willison. This indicates a broad and ambitious strategy for their inaugural seasons, establishing a strong foundation in the NRL for future world rugby coverage.

Canberra's Uphill Battle

While Young's preference is to remain with the Raiders if their offer aligns with his valuation, the increasing financial stakes from the Chiefs could test that loyalty. A meeting between the Raiders and Young's agent, Sam Ayoub, is reportedly scheduled for the next fortnight. Zero Tackle understands that while no early permission to negotiate has been sought, Young is aware of the interest. The Raiders are managing their salary cap but are reportedly prepared to make a competitive offer, recognizing Young's importance to the team. They have several other player contracts in flux, including Michael Asomua, Jack Clydsdale, Ata Mariota, and Josh Papalii.
