Perth Bears Target Corey Horsburgh After Raiders Dismissal
Corey Horsburgh, the Canberra Raiders prop, has emerged as a prime recruitment target for the Perth Bears following his recent dismissal from the Raiders squad. His career with Canberra appears to be nearing its conclusion, with the Bears initiating discussions for his transfer.
Horsburgh was dropped by Raiders coach Ricky Stuart for Saturday's upcoming match against Cronulla, a direct consequence of his sin-binning for a late hit on Knights center Dane Gagai during their 30-24 loss to Newcastle following a “brain explosion”. Stuart publicly criticized Horsburgh's actions, calling them a "f---ing brain explosion" that cost the team a draw after the loss.
Bears Shift Recruitment Focus
The Perth Bears had initially been in negotiations with Parramatta prop Junior Paulo for a two-year deal but withdrew their offer due to Paulo’s salary demands, which exceeded $900,000 per season per the SMH NRL. This shift in strategy redirected their attention to Horsburgh, with Bears coach Mal Meninga reportedly meeting the 28-year-old on Tuesday.
While the Brisbane Broncos were also in talks with Horsburgh, salary cap constraints make a serious bid from them unlikely according to SMH NRL reporting. Horsburgh remains contracted to the Raiders for the upcoming season, but has had permission for several weeks to explore alternative options, signaling an impending departure.
Canberra's Forward Replacements
Canberra, in anticipation of Horsburgh's exit, has expressed interest in Broncos forward Jaiyden Hunt as reported by the SMH NRL. Although Brisbane is keen to retain Hunt, Canberra’s pursuit indicates a clear expectation that Horsburgh will not be part of their roster next year. Other NRL Team Developments
In other NRL news, Penrith's Dylan Edwards has been named on an extended bench, potentially making his return from a shoulder injury against the Roosters. This would set up a marquee fullback clash with James Tedesco, who returns after an ankle injury. Parramatta's Dylan Walker also re-joins the squad after a rest, with Apa Twidle stepping into the No. 1 jersey. Newcastle is set to receive a double boost with Bradman Best and Phoenix Crossland expected to return from calf injuries against the Titans.
