Roigard Set for All Blacks Opener Despite Scrum-Half Injuries

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie confirmed that key scrum-half Cam Roigard is expected to feature in Saturday’s Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry opener against the Springboks, despite concerns over the team’s depth at the position.

Rennie’s squad for the highly anticipated match, to be announced Thursday, faces a challenge with backup scrum-half Cortez Ratima sidelined, prompting a late call-up to the squad.

Scrum-Half Depth Tested

Cortez Ratima sustained a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury during Saturday’s match against the Bulls, as Rennie confirmed an injury to Ratima. This setback led to the emergency recruitment of Noah Hotham as injury cover.

Rennie noted that the team is “a little bit thin at nine” given Ratima’s injury. However, he expressed confidence in Roigard’s availability for the upcoming Test.

Roigard has not played for the national side since the Nations Championship victory over Ireland, but Rennie suggested this lack of recent game time could be beneficial, ensuring he is fresh for the demanding encounter. "Cam’s played a hell of a lot of rugby this year, so him not playing so much lately is not a bad thing," Rennie stated.

Pre-Match Referee Discussions

Ahead of the clash, a customary pre-match meeting to discuss officiating points of emphasis was proposed, but Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus declined, opting for email correspondence instead. Rennie revealed that Erasmus saw no need for a meeting beyond an existing email chain.

Rennie, whose previous tenure at the helm of Australia was marked by significant strategic developments, acknowledged that both coaches must agree to such a meeting. He stated, “They sent out an email last week just to have a chat around maybe four key areas, and one of them was around the time wasting.”

Both sides have now received a summary of officiating points, ensuring clarity on the referees' focus areas. This approach to pre-match communication contrasts with some past discussions in international rugby, where coaches have publicly voiced concerns. Anticipating the Rivalry

The upcoming fixture marks the beginning of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, a perennial highlight in the international calendar. The focus now shifts to tactical approaches and player performance, with both teams set to announce their selections.

Rennie, who has consistently shown an ability to adapt and innovate, will be keen to get his All Blacks tenure off to a strong start. The team's performance will undoubtedly draw comparisons to past All Blacks triumphs and the strategic shifts seen under coaches like Dave Rennie in other high-profile roles.
