All Blacks secure dominant win, but Springboks strategy questioned

The All Blacks continued their impressive South African tour form with a decisive 50-19 victory over the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld, but Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann suggested New Zealand’s expansive, ball-in-hand strategy might face significant challenges against the Springboks in their upcoming series.

New Zealand outscored their opponents eight tries to three in Pretoria, building confidence for the first Test of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Since taking over from Scott Robertson, All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has shifted the team’s playing style back to its traditional attacking, ball-in-hand approach, moving away from a primary focus on kicking for territory. This was evident against the Bulls, as the All Blacks attacked from all areas of the field, a tactic that yielded rich rewards.

Ackermann acknowledged the All Blacks’ attacking prowess but expressed doubts about the feasibility of some of their successful attacking moves against the Springboks. He suggested the Springboks, being match-fit and featuring quality players who have played together for an extended period, will be well-prepared.

Ackermann's Strategic Outlook

Ackermann cautioned that this approach could lead to trouble for the All Blacks when facing a Springboks side that he expects will capitalize on opportunities. He believes the Springboks will identify chances to keep the ball in hand themselves, exploiting any vulnerabilities from New Zealand’s attacking philosophy.

The Bulls’ coach underscored the importance of patience when facing the All Blacks, a quality he admitted his own side lacked in their recent encounter. This suggests the Springboks will aim to control possession and territory more effectively than the Bulls did, preventing the All Blacks from gaining momentum with their attacking raids.

All Blacks' Dominance and Future Tests

While the All Blacks’ attacking brand of rugby has been effective in these warm-up matches, the true test will come against the disciplined and powerful Springboks. The first Test will be a significant indicator of whether Rennie’s tactical shift can withstand the pressure of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry. Planet Rugby described the upcoming opener as a “battle for the ages” between Rennie’s “resurgent All Blacks” and a “razor sharp” Springboks outfit across the park.
