Veteran halfback Daly Cherry-Evans will depart the National Rugby League (NRL) at the conclusion of the current season, confirming a move to Super League side Hull FC for 2027.

This decision follows an impressive performance for the Sydney Roosters in their 12-10 victory over the Penrith Panthers, where coach Trent Robinson singled him out as the best player on the field against the Panthers.

A Career Capped by Achievements

Cherry-Evans, who spent over 15 years with the Manly Sea Eagles before joining the Roosters, announced his intentions via a Roosters’ press release. He stated that while Manly holds a special place, the end of the current NRL season marks the right time to close that chapter after his 15 seasons.

His career includes a premiership ring from his rookie NRL season in 2011 with the Sea Eagles. There is a strong possibility he could add a second before heading to the northern hemisphere, particularly if he maintains his current form.

Cherry-Evans has cemented his place in NRL history, moving into outright second for most games played with 373. The all-time record of 430 games, held by Cameron Smith, remains some distance off with 373 games played.

Super League Beckons

The move to Hull FC represents a fresh challenge for the seasoned halfback. Cherry-Evans expressed genuine excitement about the opportunity to experience the Super League, stating a continued desire to play and compete.

This shift echoes a broader trend of NRL players seeking new opportunities in the Super League, a pathway many players from Australia and New Zealand consider. Coach Trent Robinson, a long-time admirer of Cherry-Evans, noted his impact. "I saw him two or three years ago at a charity function, I almost bought his boot for a couple of thousand dollars, but one of my mates got it before me,” Robinson remarked Robinson's admiration.

Family Considerations and Future

Cherry-Evans acknowledged the significant role his family has played throughout his career. He highlighted the unwavering support from his parents, wife Vessa, and their daughters. The move to England is a substantial one for them all, and he underscored their collective excitement for the new chapter.

Despite speculation prior to the official announcement, Cherry-Evans initially deferred commenting on his future immediately after the Panthers game, opting instead to sort out the details and address it at a later time Cherry-Evans' reluctance to comment. The official confirmation followed swiftly the next morning, making his 2027 destination clear.
