Wests Tigers Club Site Future in Doubt Amid Developer Standoff

The planned Wests Tigers leagues club at the Rozelle Village development in Sydney faces uncertainty due to a dispute between developer Perifa Group and the Tigers' owners, Holman Barnes Group. This breakdown in negotiations threatens a key amenity for the club's long-suffering fanbase.

Construction of the mixed-use housing and retail project is underway on the site of the former Balmain Leagues Club, a significant location for Tigers supporters. The new club was a core promise of the development, slated for completion by 2028.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has warned Perifa Group that failing to deliver the promised Wests Tigers leagues club would breach NSW government approval conditions. His letter to the developer asserts that only Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, operated by Holman Barnes Group, can occupy the designated registered club floor space.

Byrne emphasized that the new club is not optional and that any attempt to replace Wests Ashfield Leagues Club with another operator, or to reduce the approved club's size, would be met with strong opposition from the council and supporters. The local community has advocated for a club at this site for over 15 years.

Developer and Owner Standoff

Perifa Group denies it is negotiating in bad faith regarding the lease agreement terms. However, sources familiar with the discussions, who requested anonymity, indicate that Perifa has been attempting to alter the agreed-upon arrangements.

Daniel Paton, CEO of Holman Barnes Group, which owns 90 percent of the Tigers, affirmed their commitment to returning a registered club to the former Balmain Leagues Club site. The Balmain Leagues Club closed in 2010 and remained vacant for a decade and a half before the state-significant redevelopment received approval last year.

Future Implications for Wests Tigers

The new Rozelle Village club and a scheduled $40 million renovation of Leichhardt Oval, also due for completion around 2028, are viewed by Mayor Byrne as crucial elements for a renaissance of the Tigers in the Inner West. He stated that the opportunity to revitalize the team in this area must not be wasted.

The Wests Tigers' history is deeply intertwined with the Balmain area. Thousands of fans, including players like Benji Marshall, celebrated their 2005 grand final victory at the former Balmain Leagues Club site.
