Wales prepares WXV Global Series with 46-player squad, 14 uncapped talents
Wales head coach Sean Lynn has named an expansive 46-player training squad in preparation for the autumn's WXV Global Series, featuring 14 uncapped players and the return of experienced wing Lisa Neumann. The squad selection initiates a robust pre-season regimen ahead of a challenging international schedule, including matches against the USA.
Neumann, 32, missed most of the recent Six Nations with a hamstring injury suffered in the opening game against Scotland. She now returns to the national setup despite being unattached after her departure from Harlequins in July. This extended squad aims to build depth and integrate new talent into the Welsh national side.
Building for WXV Global Series
The upcoming WXV Global Series represents a significant challenge for Wales. Their schedule includes home games against South Africa and the USA in September, followed by two away Tests against Japan in October. Lynn described this as a "new look Wales squad for a new season," highlighting the exciting yet demanding nature of the WXV campaign describing the WXV campaign.
Among the 14 new faces are Lily Hawkins, Amy Williams, Kelsie Webster, Stella Orrin, and Lucy Isaac, all of whom gained valuable experience in an uncapped victory against the Barbarians at Twickenham in June. That match ended a nine-game losing streak for Lynn's side and offered a much-needed boost after another winless Six Nations campaign where Wales finished bottom for the third consecutive season.
Further new additions include fly-half Ffion Williams, prop Crystal James, and hooker Shanelle Williams. Centre Savannah Picton Powell also makes her return to the squad following an injury layoff. Many of the selected players, 37 in total, have come through the Celtic Challenge rugby pathway, representing Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning, underscoring the developmental focus of the squad.
Training Camp and Expectations
Lynn emphasized the stringent preparations for the squad, noting that players were provided individual training programs before the initial pre-season block. He stated that "high standards and clear expectations have been set" to foster a focused environment for the team Lynn's expectations for players. This intense preparation is critical given the caliber of opposition in the WXV series and the objective of integrating new talent efficiently.
The inclusion of new players, alongside established figures, signifies a strategic approach to revitalize the Welsh squad. The blend of youth and experience, particularly with players like Neumann returning, could prove crucial for navigating a demanding international calendar. The performance in the WXV Global Series will be a key indicator of the team's progress and the efficacy of this squad refresh.
Player Movement and Team Context
The squad announcement follows a period of player movement, with Welsh duo Bethan Lewis and Kelsey Jones departing Gloucester-Hartpury earlier in May, as reported by BBC Rugby Union Lewis and Jones departing Gloucester-Hartbury. Jones, a hooker, is part of this current training squad, now representing Sale Sharks. Lewis, a back-rower, currently plays for Bristol Bears and is also named.
The team’s performance in the women's Six Nations, finishing bottom for three consecutive seasons, highlights the urgency for this squad overhaul. The WXV Global Series offers a vital platform for Wales to develop cohesion and demonstrate an improved competitive edge, particularly against challenging opponents.
