NRL considers third-place playoff, faces player union opposition
The Australian National Rugby League (NRL) is exploring a controversial third-place playoff fixture, a concept met with immediate resistance from the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA). ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys has advocated for the addition to the grand final week schedule, proposing significant financial incentives to secure player buy-in V’landys supports adding fixtures.
V'landys suggested the fixture could fill what he perceives as a 'grand final week vacuum,' with the idea stemming from a CEO conference where the soccer World Cup's third-place match was cited as inspiration. He has not ruled out implementing the game as early as this season trying to get the third-place match off the ground this season.
Player Welfare Concerns Surface
Despite V'landys' enthusiasm, the proposal runs contrary to the RLPA's stance on player workload. RLPA chief Clint Newton indicated strong opposition, particularly given the already demanding NRL schedule and the Rugby League World Cup slated to begin two weeks after the Grand Final oppose adding any extra games. The players' union would likely block any attempts to add games outside the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Newton underscored the union's reluctance without full details but emphasized player welfare concerns remain paramount. The NRL's potential expansion plans and season structure, alongside its $5.3 billion broadcast deal, have previously highlighted flashpoints regarding player welfare potential player welfare flashpoints.
Financial Incentives vs. Player Exhaustion
V’landys believes substantial prizemoney could sway players and clubs, envisioning a scenario where the third-place game develops its own 'tribalism and prestige.' He noted current prizemoney — $1 million for premiers and $400,000 for runners-up — would also increase accordingly massive amounts of prizemoney. The ARL chairman, who also serves as acting NRL chief executive, is unconcerned by potential player or fan disinterest, despite the corresponding European Championship having abandoned its third-place fixture in 1980 due to second-string sides and lack of engagement European Championship tournament to ditch the third-place fixture.
A Gap in Grand Final Week
V’landys recalled a perceived emptiness during last year's grand final week, observing a lack of top-tier rugby league content on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights gap, on Thursday night I didn’t know what to do. He views a third-place fixture as a logical step to capitalize on this void, ensuring any revenue generated would directly benefit players and clubs. However, the RLPA's stance, citing an already 'packed' schedule, indicates a significant hurdle for V'landys' vision already jam-packed NRL schedule.
