Fijian Saimoni Vunilagi dies from suspected heatstroke in Japan
Saimoni Vunilagi, the Fijian back-rower for Japanese second-division team Kyuden Voltex, has died of suspected heatstroke following a training session. The 26-year-old’s passing on Friday, August 7, was announced by his club.
Kyuden Voltex confirmed that Vunilagi, who had recently joined the club, was transported to a medical facility after displaying symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke after team practice on Monday, August 3, 2026. Despite the medical team's efforts, he tragically passed away following treatment.
Temperatures in Fukuoka, where Kyuden Voltex is based, had reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) in the week leading up to his death, highlighting the extreme conditions under which athletes are training in the region.
