Frederic Michalak applies Wilkinson lessons to NRL Cronulla Sharks
French rugby legend Frederic Michalak, an assistant coach for the NRL’s Cronulla Sharks, is leveraging insights gained from his playing days with Jonny Wilkinson to elevate the team, particularly playmaker Nicho Hynes. This unique cross-code coaching dynamic has coincided with a five-game winning streak for the Sharks since Michalak’s arrival in July.
Michalak, who earned 77 caps for France, spent two seasons alongside World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson at French club Toulon. He observed Wilkinson's relentless pursuit of perfection, a trait he now balances with fostering self-belief in his own players.
Wilkinson's pursuit of perfection
Wilkinson's intense drive for success deeply impacted Michalak. The French international recalled a game in Toulouse where Wilkinson, after missing two penalties, was in tears in the changing room, demonstrating an extreme desire to succeed, which Michalak described as a "disease" recalled Wilkinson's intense desire.
This experience taught Michalak that greatness could stem from unwavering preparation. However, as a coach, he now emphasizes the importance of balancing this relentless work ethic with maintaining a strong sense of self-confidence, a lesson he imparts to Hynes.
Mentoring Nicho Hynes
Michalak engages in frequent discussions with Nicho Hynes, finding the playmaker curious and intellectually strong. He notes Hynes' ability to quickly analyze opponents and scan the field praised Hynes' intellectual capability, identifying these as key strengths.
The focus now for Hynes, according to Michalak, is to improve his influence on teammates. Michalak believes Hynes handles pressure effectively but thrives on confidence, which the French coach is committed to providing entirely Michalak providing confidence to Hynes.
Michalak's move to Cronulla in July followed persistent recruitment efforts by Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon, who contacted him every two days to outline the vision of coaching in the NRL. While many former rugby league players have transitioned successfully to rugby union coaching, Michalak represents a rare instance of a rugby union coach making an impact in Australian rugby league Michalak as a rare cross-code coach.
His presence has been well-received, particularly by the team's New Zealand contingent. They often playfully remind him of his alleged forward pass during the 2007 Rugby World Cup, which led to a match-winning try that eliminated the All Blacks in the quarter-finals, a moment often discussed in international rugby news.
