Wallabies’ new coach Kiss backs Lonergan, Meredith halves pairing

New Wallabies coach Les Kiss has named Brumbies scrum-half Ryan Lonergan and fly-half Declan Meredith to start in the half-back positions for his first match in charge, an upcoming Nations Championship Test against Eddie Jones's Japan in Osaka. This selection signals a vote of confidence in the relatively inexperienced pairing for Kiss's debut.

Lonergan and Meredith’s inclusion represents a significant decision for Kiss, particularly with rugby league convert Carter Gordon also in the squad, alongside seasoned scrum-half Tate McDermott, who will begin the match on the bench. The Guardian Rugby Union reported that Kiss, succeeding Joe Schmidt, is looking to build on the foundations laid by his predecessor.

Continuity Amidst Change

Despite his recent appointment, Kiss has largely maintained a core group of players favored by Schmidt. Lonergan himself started the final three Tests under Schmidt, with Meredith joining him in the last two following an injury crisis. This continuity suggests Kiss is prioritizing established combinations as he aims to improve the team's performance.

Kiss acknowledged the competitive environment within the squad. “Every single player in the squad has pushed hard over the last fortnight to get us to this point, making selecting the matchday 23 a real challenge for the coaches,” Kiss stated. He emphasized the honor and responsibility of wearing the gold jersey, expecting the selected players to give their utmost in Osaka.

The 61-year-old coach faces the challenge of developing key combinations with just over a year remaining until the next World Cup. While he has continued with many of the players from the previous regime, there are some notable changes in the starting lineup.

New Faces and Key Returns

Among the changes, prop Aidan Ross and second-rower Miles Amatosero will earn their first Test starts. Ross steps in for Angus Bell, who had started the previous eight Wallabies matches but will now come off the bench. Amatosero replaces Jeremy Williams in the second row. Hunter Paisami returns at inside center, filling the void left by the injured Len Ikitau.

The back three remains unchanged, with Harry Potter and Max Jorgensen on the wings and Tom Wright at fullback. No. 8 Harry Wilson will captain the side for the 24th time, providing experienced leadership for the team.

Schmidt’s tenure, which lasted two years, concluded with 12 wins from 31 Tests. His final match saw the Wallabies secure a 57-10 victory over Italy in Perth last month, a positive end after a challenging run of six consecutive losses stretching back to the previous September. Looking Ahead to the Nations Championship

The match against Japan kicks off the Wallabies’ Nations Championship campaign, providing an early test for Kiss’s leadership and player selections. The coach’s strategy of backing the Lonergan-Meredith pairing and integrating new starters will be closely scrutinized as Australia seeks to build momentum. This approach contrasts with some of the developments seen elsewhere in rugby, including decisions made under new World Rugby abuse rules. Additionally, insights into predecessor Schmidt departs, leaves improved Wallabies, deepened squad for Kiss, offering context to the current setup.
