Saints sign Italy prop Neculai; Saunders joins Dutch club
Northampton Saints, the Premiership champions, have strengthened their front row by signing Italy international tight-head prop Ion Neculai from Zebre Parma. Simultaneously, former Ireland U20 international Niall Saunders is set to join Dutch Ereklasse side RC The Dukes, a move that signals a different trajectory for the half-back.
Northampton's Front Row Bolster
Neculai, 25, arrives at Franklin's Gardens after five seasons and 51 appearances with Zebre, according to BBC Rugby Union. This acquisition marks a continued trend of players moving from Zebre to Northampton, with Neculai following former teammate Malik Faissal this summer and Danilo Fischetti, who made the transfer in 2025.
The tight-head prop has earned four senior caps for Italy, most recently appearing off the bench during their 57-10 Nations Championship defeat to Australia in Perth. His presence provides further depth and experience to the Saints’ pack as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Phil Dowson, Northampton's director of rugby, described Neculai as a very physical prop who embraces the demanding aspects of forward play. Neculai himself expressed a desire to maximize his opportunity at a club of Northampton’s standing, citing the quality of coaching, facilities, and fellow players as key motivators for his decision, seeing it as the right environment for his development and challenging himself at the highest level of professional rugby.
Saunders Heads to Ereklasse
In a distinct move in European rugby, Irish scrum-half Niall Saunders has signed with RC The Dukes, a Dutch team competing in the Ereklasse. RugbyPass reported that Dutch side RC The Dukes has clinched Niall Saunders' services, with the former Ireland U20 international joining them for the next season.
Saunders' move to the Netherlands represents a fresh chapter in his career, taking him away from the more established top-tier leagues. The Ereklasse, while not as prominent as the Premiership or URC, offers a competitive environment for players seeking new challenges and development opportunities.
Player Trajectories and League Context
These transfers highlight the varied pathways available to professional rugby players. Neculai’s move to Northampton underscores the allure of a top-tier league and a championship-winning club for international players aiming to compete at the highest level. This also reflects the broader dynamics of international rugby news where players often seek moves to more competitive leagues.
Conversely, Saunders’ decision to join a Dutch Ereklasse club illustrates how players navigate their careers outside of the traditional rugby powerhouses. Such moves can provide valuable game time and leadership roles, contributing to the growth of rugby in developing nations.
Both transfers, while different in scale and impact, demonstrate the constant movement within the global rugby landscape as clubs and players seek to optimize their competitive positions and career aspirations.
