Fukofuka resigns from Scotland Women for family reasons

Sydney Harmon By Sydney Harmon calendar_today Aug 3, 2026 schedule 2 min read

Sione Fukofuka, the Scotland Women head coach, has resigned from his position, citing the significant personal strain of being apart from his family in Australia. Dave Butcher, the forwards coach, will assume interim charge as the team prepares for the upcoming WXV Global Series.

Fukofuka, who previously served as the United States head coach between 2023 and 2025, was appointed late last year. He led the Scottish side through the recent Women's Six Nations campaign.

Family Relocation Challenges

Fukofuka described the decision as the hardest professional choice of his career, explaining that he approached Scottish Rugby for a release on compassionate grounds. The stress of being separated from his family proved too much to continue fulfilling the role to his desired standard, according to the BBC Rugby Union.

A period back home in Australia provided him with greater insight into the sacrifices his family was making. Furthermore, a change in circumstances involving his wife's parents' health means their planned relocation within 12 months is no longer feasible. He emphasized that he cannot be away from his family for extended periods and perform his duties effectively.

The former USA Eagles coach clarified that his departure is entirely due to his family circumstances and not a reflection of the Scottish Rugby governing body or its program. He expressed immense appreciation for his time in Scotland but noted the difficulty of not sharing the experience with his family, particularly his young children.

Interim Leadership and Future Outlook

Scottish Rugby’s performance director, David Nucifora, acknowledged their disappointment but fully respected Fukofuka's decision, as reported by BBC Rugby Union. Nucifora praised Fukofuka’s passion and commitment during his tenure with the national team and the wider women's program.

Scotland is scheduled to face Canada in approximately six weeks. Fukofuka has expressed confidence in Dave Butcher, whom he described as a first-class individual, to succeed in the interim head coach role.
