USA Rugby and the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) have forged a strategic partnership to support collegiate rugby's long-term growth, alignment, and sustainability in the United States. This collaboration aims to inject critical resources and connections into the college game, with the upcoming season's return to play in September setting the stage for 2026-27 to be a pivotal year.

The initiative sees USA Rugby expand its leadership role within the collegiate game by committing funds and resources to CRAA. This investment seeks to strengthen multiple areas of impact, including expanded leadership, staffing, and operational support, all designed to connect CRAA with a more robust national player pathway and an enhanced student-athlete experience.

Increased funding for CRAA will come through direct union investment, ensuring no raise in member dues is required. This financial backing underscores USA Rugby’s commitment to growing the sport at this crucial level without burdening current participants.

Strengthening Collegiate Infrastructure

USA Rugby will collaborate closely with CRAA, which will retain its central role in overseeing collegiate rugby as sanctioned by the national governing body. CRAA’s existing leadership, institutional relationships, competition expertise, and volunteer community are recognized as vital components that will continue to drive the sport.

The partnership is designed to bring together the strengths of both organizations rather than replacing successful existing structures within CRAA membership. This renewed focus provides additional investment to better serve student-athletes, coaches, and athletic departments. Bill Goren, Chief Executive Officer of USA Rugby, expressed deep gratitude for the decades of dedication from CRAA administrators, coaches, and volunteers, acknowledging their pivotal role in building a vibrant collegiate rugby community that has served generations of student-athletes through often unseen work.

Goren emphasized the commitment to building on this foundation by injecting additional resources while relying on CRAA’s established expertise and infrastructure.

Pathway to National and International Success

Collegiate rugby holds a unique and essential place in the American rugby ecosystem, serving as a critical link between youth, high school, club play, professional opportunities, national pathways, and international competition. Strengthening CRAA's operational resources is expected to create greater opportunities for player participation, development, and enhanced coach and referee education. This also aims to foster lifelong engagement with the sport.

The strategic alignment comes at a significant time, with substantial future opportunities on the horizon. The LA28 Olympics, along with the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2031 and Women’s Rugby World Cup 2033, present major catalysts for growth in American rugby coverage. This partnership is considered a key step toward broader goals, including maximizing exposure, commercial opportunities, and the overall fan experience, while ensuring sustained growth for the sport.

Beyond the realignment with CRAA, USA Rugby is also looking to bolster its support for the Women’s NCAA Emerging Sport project. This includes accelerating current efforts to meet and surpass the threshold of 40 varsity programs and expanding rugby into further US regions. These combined initiatives reflect a comprehensive strategy to elevate rugby across multiple levels of American sport, from collegiate competition to the international stage for American rugby coverage.
