Former Wallabies Stephen Hoiles and Wycliff Palu have been appointed assistant coaches for the New South Wales Waratahs, rejoining their former club under head coach Michael Cheika.

Both players were part of the Waratahs’ 2014 Super Rugby championship team and now return to provide coaching expertise, having signed two-year deals Planet Rugby reported.

Hoiles' MLR success and return to NSW

Stephen Hoiles brings significant coaching experience from Major League Rugby (MLR) in the United States. He recently guided the California Legion to the 2024 MLR Final, where they fell to the Chicago Hounds.

Prior to that, Hoiles led the LA Gilitinis to an MLR title in 2021. His tenure in the American professional league highlights a valuable skill set that will benefit the Waratahs. After his MLR success, Hoiles returned to Australia to coach Randwick to a Shute Shield title in 2023 as Planet Rugby detailed.

Hoiles expressed a sense of returning full circle, noting the Waratahs' importance to Australian rugby's ecosystem. His connection to New South Wales rugby runs deep, having played all his junior rugby in the state.

Palu's return from Japan and recent triumph

Wycliff Palu, a 58-Test Wallaby, transitions to the Waratahs coaching staff after a recent stint in Japan. He spent the past year coaching and playing for Kurita Water Gush Akishima in Japan’s third division Planet Rugby noted.

Palu’s recent coaching success includes leading the First Nations & Pasifika XV to a 43-19 victory over the Tonga President’s XV, securing the inaugural Kaume’a Ofi Trophy. His deep connection to the Waratahs, a club that has played a massive part in his rugby journey and life, makes his return especially significant. Cheika’s strategic appointments

These appointments mark Michael Cheika’s initial coaching staff selections since taking the head coach role. Both Hoiles and Palu are familiar faces within the Waratahs organization, having been voted into the club’s Legend XVs this year. Their collective experience, both as players and coaches across different international environments, positions the Waratahs for a significant 2027 season, which Hoiles anticipates will be crucial for New South Wales.
