The Vodacom Bulls, after reaching four of the last five United Rugby Championship finals without securing a title, face a significant challenge in the upcoming season following the departure of several prominent Springboks.

Despite a turbulent previous season that saw coaching changes and a seven-game losing streak, the Bulls still managed to reach the final, ultimately losing 36-7 to Leinster, marking their fourth grand final defeat in five years.

Impact of Key Player Exits

The Pretoria-based side must now contend without the likes of Ruan Nortjé, Wilco Louw, and Kurt-Lee Arendse, all of whom have left the club in the close season previews the Pretoria-based side’s chances. These departures create notable gaps that the Bulls' coaching staff and new recruits will need to address.

Head coach Johan Ackermann, who was appointed after Jake White’s sacking, will rely on new signings such as Thaakir Abrahams, Curwin Bosch, Hanro Liebenberg, and Dylan Maart to integrate quickly and deliver impactful performances. Ackermann noted these new players bring “a different DNA” to the team, potentially allowing for varied tactical approaches.

Emerging Talents and Tactical Shifts

Scrum-half Embrose Papier, who was the URC's joint-leading try-scorer last season with 12, made a return to the Springboks after an eight-year absence, even scoring against Scotland in his comeback match. While his attacking prowess remains a key asset, his game management will be under scrutiny.

In the forward pack, 32-year-old Jeandre Rudolph emerged as one of the Bulls' most valuable players last season, leading the URC in turnovers with 21. His performance in conjunction with other top forwards like Elrigh Louw, Marco van Staden, and Cameron Hanekom will be crucial for the team's success.

To further bolster their prospects, the Bulls have brought in Rupert Oberholster as the new head of athletic performance, with Ackermann emphasizing a desire for a fitter squad. This initiative, part of a coaching unit that includes Jean Tiedt (defense), Kennedy Tsimba (backs), and Werner Kruger (forwards), aims to improve the team's conditioning for the demands of the Rugby Championship.
