Bath Rugby navigates departures, new additions for 2024-25 season
Bath Rugby is preparing for the 2024-25 season following a successful 2023-24 campaign, but they face significant changes to their playing roster and coaching staff. The club finished second in the Premiership table and reached the final at Twickenham, marking their most successful season in nearly a decade.
The departure of key players such as Thomas du Toit and Alfie Barbeary presents a challenge for Director of Rugby Johann van Graan, as reported by RugbyPass. These players were central figures during Van Graan's tenure.
Player movements and replacements
Loosehead prop Thomas du Toit, who earned Premiership Player of the Season nominations, is moving to Exeter Chiefs. Du Toit made 27 appearances for Bath, scoring 10 tries, and was a prominent figure in the league. His exit, alongside Alfie Barbeary’s move to another Premiership club, leaves notable gaps in the squad. Barbeary, a versatile back-row forward, made 28 appearances and scored 11 tries.
Bath has acted quickly to address these departures, securing the services of Scotland international prop Rory Sutherland from Oyonnax. Sutherland brings experience from his time with Scotland and a stint at Ulster. Additionally, the club has signed England international hooker Jamie George, who joins from Saracens after a distinguished career there, making him a key acquisition for the front row. George's arrival provides leadership and a strong set-piece operator.
In the back row, Bath has recruited Wallaby international Fraser McReight from the Queensland Reds. McReight, a 25-year-old openside flanker, is known for his breakdown work and high work rate. His addition is expected to bolster Bath's defensive and attacking efforts in the loose.
While these new signings aim to compensate for the departing talent, the impact of losing players who were integral to the team’s recent success will be closely watched.
Coaching staff evolution
The coaching team also sees changes, with Johann van Graan entering his fifth term as Director of Rugby. Van Graan has been instrumental in Bath's recent resurgence, guiding them to a Premiership final. However, he will be without attack coach Lee Blackett, who has left to join the new coaching setup at Gloucester. Blackett’s departure means Van Graan will need to adjust the attacking structure.
Replacing Blackett is Neal Hatley, who steps into the role of attack coach. Hatley has a long history with Bath, having previously served as scrum and forwards coach, and his familiarity with the club’s systems is expected to ease the transition. He returns after a period away, bringing fresh perspectives while maintaining continuity.
Looking ahead to 2024-25
Bath will compete in both the Premiership and the Champions Cup in the upcoming season. Their strong league finish in 2023-24 indicates a solid foundation, but the changes to the playing and coaching staff will test the team's adaptability.
The Premiership will be highly competitive, with several teams strengthening their squads. Bath's performance in Europe will also be a barometer of their progress. As USA rugby news often highlights the global movements of players, these high-profile transfers underscore the international nature of top-tier rugby. The club's strategic recruitment of established internationals like Jamie George and Fraser McReight demonstrates an ambition to remain at the top levels of English and European rugby.
