Kolisi Cleared to Captain Springboks Against All Blacks

Siya Kolisi, the double Rugby World Cup-winning captain, has been declared fit to start and lead the Springboks in their second Test against the All Blacks in Cape Town this Saturday, according to head coach Rassie Erasmus. This confirmation follows a period of fitness concerns, where Kolisi’s availability was pending training updates earlier in the week.

Kolisi’s 2026 Test season has been significantly affected by injuries. He was initially slated to start the year’s opening match against England last month but a hamstring injury sustained during the captain’s run the day before the July 4 fixture in Johannesburg forced his withdrawal. This setback led to the call-up of uncapped Paul de Villiers to start against England.

De Villiers, a Stormers rookie, subsequently retained the No.6 jersey for the following two Nations Championship matches against Scotland and Wales. Kolisi then made a return to the starting lineup for the August 8 match against Argentina, but another hamstring strain limited him to just 20 minutes on the field. This injury paved the way for De Villiers to start last Saturday’s series opener against the All Blacks.

Injury Niggles and Selection Decisions

Following the Springboks’ 33-16 defeat to New Zealand in Johannesburg, Erasmus initially named both Kolisi and De Villiers as options for the No.6 jersey when announcing his second Test squad on Monday. Erasmus indicated at the time that Kolisi still had a "bit of a niggle" on Sunday and needed to prove his fitness through Monday's training session named both Kolisi and De Villiers at No.6.

The coach explained the bracketed selection, stating, “Obviously, we want to get him into the team, but he has to get through Monday’s training; that’s why he is bracketed with Paul.” He also noted that Pieter-Steph du Toit would remain captain if Kolisi did not pass the fitness test. The intention was to ensure a clear captaincy plan should Kolisi not recover.

The fitness update arrived on Tuesday, with Erasmus confirming that the injury-affected Kolisi had successfully completed training sessions without issue. Erasmus stated that Kolisi is "100 percent" and would both start and captain the team. This means De Villiers, who had stepped up in Kolisi's absence, now drops out of the matchday 23.

Impact on Springboks Lineup

Kolisi’s return is a significant boost for the Springboks as they look to rebound against the All Blacks. His leadership and experience will be crucial in a squad that has seen some changes due to injury and form. The Springboks’ challenges with injuries are part of a broader landscape in international rugby news, where player welfare remains a key concern.

The confirmation of Kolisi’s captaincy for this match also resolves immediate questions surrounding leadership. Earlier this year, discussions around players like De Villiers' Rise Challenges Kolisi's Springboks Captaincy De Villiers' Rise Challenges Kolisi's Springboks Captaincy had surfaced, highlighting the competitive depth in the squad.

The Springboks lineup for Saturday's match includes Damian Willemse at fullback, with Kurt-Lee Arendse and Ethan Hooker on the wings. Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende form the center pairing, while Handre Pollard and Cobus Reinach take the half-back roles. The forward pack features Jasper Wiese at number eight, Pieter-Steph du Toit at seven, and Siya Kolisi at six. Ruan Nortje and Eben Etzebet are the locks. This selection comes after the team’s Springboks' Chaotic Victory Over Scotland Prompts Erasmus's earlier performances this season, which have been scrutinized for consistency.

With Kolisi cleared, the Springboks will be looking to even the series against their long-standing rivals, continuing one of the greatest rivalries in world rugby.
