Wales Women prioritize fitness for WXV challenge

Wales Women are intensifying their physical preparations for the upcoming WXV Global Series, focusing on fitness to address recent performance shortfalls. Head coach Sean Lynn's extended 46-player squad has been in a demanding pre-season camp since August 3, aiming to build a competitive edge against higher-ranked international opponents.

The team, currently ranked 12th globally, has faced a challenging period, including nine consecutive competitive losses. A recent non-cap victory over the Barbarians in June offered a brief respite, but the squad acknowledges significant improvements are still needed, particularly in conditioning, as reported by BBC Rugby Union following a recent training session.

Intense Training Regime Underway

Strength and conditioning coach Gareth Harris, who joined the Welsh setup before last summer's Rugby World Cup, is leading the charge on fitness. Players like Alisha Joyce and Georgia Evans have been observed pushing their limits in spin bike sessions, while others, including scrum-half Keira Bevan, undergo rigorous interval runs on the main pitch. Harris noted that despite the physical toll, the squad's attitude has been "exceptional," with players demonstrating a clear understanding of the importance of their efforts.

"We know where we are from a physical perspective and it is about moving that dial forward," Harris stated, emphasizing the team's commitment to improvement. The intensive training, conducted through soaring temperatures, is designed to enhance their physical capabilities ahead of a demanding international schedule.

WXV Fixtures and Rankings Context

Wales faces a formidable test in the WXV Global Series, commencing with a home fixture against South Africa at Cardiff Arms Park on September 18. They will then host the USA on September 26, before traveling to Japan for two further Tests on October 23 and October 31. All three of these opponents are currently ranked above Wales, highlighting the scale of the challenge for Lynn's side.

The coaching staff is in the process of finalizing the squad for the WXV campaign, with emerging talents like uncapped Amy Williams catching the eye during backline drills led by Ashley Beck. The team's ambition extends beyond mere participation; as Harris articulated, "We don't just want to turn up to the international stage, we want to dominate games."
