Boks, All Blacks Engage in Pre-Test Mind Games Over Pace of Play

Coaches of the Springboks and All Blacks appear to be engaging in psychological warfare ahead of their Rugby Championship clash this Saturday, with former All Blacks fly-half Stephen Donald suggesting their comments are designed to influence referee Mathew Carley. Both camps have publicly addressed allegations concerning the pace of the game, a discourse Donald believes is a calculated strategy.

The verbal sparring began after claims from the All Blacks’ camp suggested the Springboks intended to slow down play. This prompted Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus to hold a press conference, notably accompanied by SA Rugby’s law adviser and former international referee Jaco Peyper, to counter these allegations. The Springboks’ decision to feature Peyper alongside Erasmus rather than a player was seen by Donald as a deliberate and 'fascinating' move.

All Blacks Respond to Tactics

Rennie also confirmed there would be no pre-match meeting between the head coaches and English match official Matthew Carley to discuss 'time wasting' tactics. This highlights the public arena as the primary battleground for these psychological maneuvers, rather than private dialogue with the referee.

Coaches Play the Long Game

The former All Blacks fly-half also found the choice of Peyper’s presence at the Springboks’ press conference to be unusual, yet unsurprising. He speculated that most observers would have preferred to hear from key players like Peter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, or Handre Pollard. However, the Springboks opted for their referee liaison officer, a decision Donald deemed a 'play' by Erasmus to influence the narrative surrounding game tempo. This illustrates the depth of strategic thinking employed by top international rugby coaches.
