Shilo Klein Joins Zebre Parma, Leaves Legion MLR Return Uncertain
Shilo Klein, the US-eligible hooker previously with the San Diego Legion, has signed with Italian club Zebre Parma for the remainder of the 2025/26 United Rugby Championship (URC) season. This move casts doubt on his potential return to Major League Rugby for the 2026 campaign.
Narugbydb reported Klein’s signing with Zebre Parma on October 20, 2025, which will see him competing in one of European rugby’s top competitions. While the URC season concludes in mid-May, potentially allowing a late-season return to MLR for a playoff push, his commitment to Zebre extends into the 2026 URC season start.

Klein's Path to European Rugby
Klein's journey to Europe follows a varied professional career. Before his time in Major League Rugby, he played four seasons for Canterbury and earned caps with the Crusaders in Super Rugby. He joined the San Diego Legion in December 2022, utilizing his Sacramento, CA birthplace for US eligibility.
During the 2023 MLR season, Klein was a backup to Sama Malolo, featuring in 15 matches with four starts and scoring two tries. He was part of the Legion squad that achieved a 15-1 regular-season record, recognized as the best in League history.
International and Super Rugby Stints
Following his 2023 MLR season, Klein was named to the North Harbour squad for the 2023 NPC season, marking his first time playing in the competition for a team other than Canterbury. In November 2023, he was included in the Blues' wider training squad for Super Rugby, effectively ruling out an MLR return for 2024. He split 2024 between the Blues and North Harbour.
The San Diego Legion announced Klein’s return for their 2025 MLR season on November 2, 2024. The following week, he made his international debut for the USA Eagles as Eagle #581 in a 24-17 victory over Portugal. This progression highlights the increasing opportunities for American players in both domestic and international rugby, a trend visible across Major League Rugby coverage.
Impact on Legion and Player Future
Klein’s departure for Zebre Parma means the San Diego Legion will need to adjust their hooking resources, having expected his return for the 2025 season. His move underscores the growing appeal of European clubs for MLR talent, echoing similar high-profile moves, such as Shilo Klein.
Given the URC's calendar, Klein’s commitment to Zebre Parma extends into what would be the beginning of the 2026 MLR season, making a consistent return unlikely in the short term. His immediate future lies in Europe's demanding professional environment.
