Gloucester Adds NZ Talent, Northampton Elevates Defense Coach
Gloucester Rugby has reinforced its roster for the upcoming Gallagher Premiership season, securing promising New Zealand youth internationals Callum McCabe and Halen King. Separately, Premiership champions Northampton Saints have confirmed Jim Henry as their new defense coach, promoting him from within their existing staff.
The pair, fly-half McCabe and scrum-half King, arrive in England's West Country on short-term deals through November, with an option to extend their stay permanently. Both are 19 and 20 years old, respectively, and are English-qualified, having developed within the Chiefs' academy system in New Zealand and featured for the New Zealand U20s setup two New Zealand youngsters have been handed.
McCabe expressed enthusiasm for the Premiership challenge, noting the welcoming environment at Gloucester. King, also keen to impress, highlighted Gloucester’s strong rugby culture, akin to his home country, and his eagerness to play before the club's fervent supporters.
Saints Internal Coaching Promotion
Northampton Saints, fresh off their Premiership title, have moved to fill a key coaching vacancy by promoting Jim Henry to defense coach. This follows Lee Radford’s departure to Scotland. Henry initially joined the club for the 2022/23 season as a forwards transition coach, additionally taking on breakdown coaching responsibilities.
His appointment follows a pattern of internal promotions at the Saints, with James Craig also moving into a senior coaching role in 2022 after a similar transition position. Henry’s prior experience includes serving as defense coach for Championship side Bedford Blues, reflecting a continued working relationship between the two clubs, as Planet Rugby noted Saints have appointed their new defence coach.
Henry commented on his delight regarding the opportunity at a club he considers prestigious, highlighting the quality of both the coaching staff and the playing squad. He indicated that this promotion represents a role he has been working towards for several seasons, having closely collaborated with Radford and taken on defensive duties previously.

McCabe and King are the latest additions to Gloucester's squad, joining a significant list of new arrivals for the upcoming season. This includes players like Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake, Jean Kleyn, and Eliot Salt, signaling a clear intent to strengthen the Cherry and Whites' lineup.
