Joe Marler to join Gladiators as “Mauler” on BBC One
Joe Marler, the former England and Harlequins prop, will join the popular BBC One program *Gladiators* as a new character named “Mauler.” This move follows his recent turn as a breakout star on *The Celebrity Traitors* last autumn.
Marler will not be following other rugby figures onto dancing shows but instead will participate in the physical challenges of the *Gladiators* arena as Mauler, a new Gladiator. The BBC is promoting him as the “first-ever Celebrity Gladiator,” anticipating his humor will resonate with audiences, much like the show's established villain, Legend.
Marler's Rugby Skills Translate to Gladiators
The show has a history of connections to rugby, with *Rugby World* noting that it is perhaps surprising more former players have not transitioned into the *Gladiators* format, given the contact nature of some of the games. Former Bath, England, and British & Irish Lions center Jeremy Guscott co-hosted two series of the original UK *Gladiators* alongside Ulrika Jonsson, though he was not a Gladiator himself.
Other rugby players have previously featured or had strong connections to the show. Zoe Williams, who played rugby union at a high level in the North-East, became Amazon in the Sky reboot of *Gladiators*. She is now a general practitioner and a familiar face on British television.
Rugby Players Finding New Stages
The trend of rugby players moving into entertainment or other competitive fields highlights their diverse skill sets and enduring appeal beyond the pitch. Marler's entry into *Gladiators* continues this tradition, bringing a distinctive rugby presence to a wider audience.
