World Rugby funding cut causes Anthem RC to fold, imperiling MLR

Anthem Rugby Carolina has ceased operations following World Rugby's withdrawal of financial support, a move that leaves Major League Rugby with just five teams and casts doubt on the league's structure for the 2027 season. This development comes as a significant blow, particularly for player development and the overall stability of professional rugby in the United States.

The developmental franchise's dissolution stems from the end of a multi-year joint funding agreement between World Rugby, USA Rugby, and MLR, which had reached its planned operational cycle conclusion. With World Rugby officially pulling its financial backing after the 2026 season, Anthem RC released its entire roster, impacting numerous players earmarked for national team consideration.

Among the players now without a team are Luke Carty, Sam Golla, Conner Mooneyham, and Julian Roberts, alongside Alex Maughan, Makeen Alikhan, Erich Storti, Payton Telea-Ilalio, Tom Pittman, Moni Tonga'uiha, and Dominic Akina. These individuals represent a cohort of talent whose development was directly supported by the Anthem RC program, which aimed to bolster the depth of the USA Eagles squad.

MLR Faces Contraction Challenges

Since the USA's failure to qualify for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, MLR has seen the loss of eight franchises, including foundational teams like Houston, Utah, and New Orleans. These departures were attributed to financial strains and operational withdrawals, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by professional rugby ventures in the region.

Scramble for 2027 Season Stability

However, the immediate prospects for new teams in 2027 are slim. Alex Magleby noted that most external groups planning to launch a brand-new franchise are realistically targeting 2028, given their current planning cycles. This means securing that crucial sixth spot for 2027 will depend on finalizing one of the immediate, unannounced groups currently in negotiations.
