Samoa's participation in Rugby World Cup 2027 is in jeopardy, as a significant rift between the Samoan government and its national rugby federation could lead to a four-year ban from international competition. This crisis, reported by Americas Rugby News, stems from the Prime Minister’s decision to disavow the federation, which could result in Belgium replacing Samoa in Australia 2027 World Cup.

The government's move has prompted World Rugby to issue a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding a reversal of the decision and permission for a financial audit, according to Americas Rugby News. Failure to comply would immediately suspend the men's national team, canceling their Rugby World Cup 2027 appearance.

Government withdraws support from rugby federation

The conflict escalated when Samoa's Prime Minister, La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, formally declared a complete separation between the state and the national rugby union, Americas Rugby News reported. This action stripped the federation of official recognition, public subsidies, and financial aid, signaling a decisive break.

The Prime Minister intends to establish an entirely new rugby federation, stating that the current leadership has failed to resolve deep-seated internal crises. The administration has reportedly been plagued by internal divisions and sustained challenges from former players and coaching staff government rugby federation split.

Belgium poised to replace Samoa for RWC 2027

Should Samoa be disqualified from Rugby World Cup 2027, Belgium is the most likely replacement. Samoa clinched the 24th and final tournament spot by a single table point after a 13-13 draw against Belgium in the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai, Americas Rugby News noted.

World Rugby’s standard regulations dictate that if a qualified team is disqualified before a tournament, their spot goes to the runner-up from that specific qualifying pathway next eligible team. This precedent has been established in previous tournaments; for example, Russia was promoted to Rugby World Cup 2019 in place of Romania, and Romania itself replaced Spain for Rugby World Cup 2023 Romania replaced Spain.

Broader challenges for Samoan rugby

This political turmoil compounds other recent institutional issues for Samoan rugby. Earlier, former Samoa captain Chris Vui received a four-year ban from World Rugby after testing positive for nandrolone, an anabolic steroid anabolic steroid nandrolone.
